Taraxacum

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Dandelions are bright plants that belong to a group called Taraxacum.

They grow in many places like gardens, yards, and even beside roads. These plants are very important for many living things. They provide nectar for pollinators during the early spring.

Many animals enjoy eating them too. Rabbits, wild turkeys, and deer eat the leaves and seeds. Even red squirrels will eat a dandelion leaf.

A dandelion flower head is actually a collection of many tiny flowers. Each small flower is called a floret.

After the yellow petals fall away, the head changes. It becomes a round, white sphere called a seed head.

Each seed is attached to a white, fluffy part called a pappus. This pappus acts like a tiny parachute. It helps the seed glide on the wind to new places.

People have known about dandelions for a very long time. The name Taraxacum comes from an Arabic word meaning "bitter herb."

The English name dandelion comes from a French word. It means "lion's tooth" because of the shape of the leaves. Some people call the white seed heads "blowballs" or "clocks." In the past, people used them for food and medicine. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all knew about them. Native Americans also used the plant for their own needs.

There are many different types of dandelions in the world. The common dandelion is called Taraxacum officinale.

Another type is the red-seeded dandelion, or Taraxacum erythrospermum. These two species came from Europe and moved to North America. Dandelions can even make seeds without pollination. This is a process called apomixis. It means the new plants are exactly like the parent. In the British Isles, scientists have found 234 different versions.

You might see dandelions in your own backyard. They are easy to spot because of their bright color. If you break a stem, you will see white liquid. This liquid is called latex. You can tell a dandelion apart from a "false dandelion" like cat's ear. Dandelions have hollow stems that do not have branches.

They also have smooth leaves instead of hairy ones. The plant has a long taproot that goes deep into the soil. This helps the plant stay strong in many habitats.
