Many people call these plants forget-me-nots or scorpion grasses. The forget-me-not is actually the official flower of Alaska. The name Myosotis comes from an Ancient Greek phrase. It means "mouse's ear" because the leaves look like them. These plants are often found in moist habitats. They like to grow in wetlands or along riverbanks.

These plants have a very interesting way of growing. They are often annual or perennial herbaceous plants. This means they might live for one year or many years. The flowers are flat and often blue, pink, white, or yellow. They grow on scorpioid cymes, which are curved flower clusters. Some people call them scorpion grass because of this shape. The flowers have five anthers at their center. These are surrounded by small yellow bumps called fornices.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. The genus was first described by Carl Linnaeus. He was a famous scientist who named many things. One common type is Myosotis scorpioides, the true forget-me-not. There are over 510 recorded names for these plants. However, only 156 species are accepted by scientists today. The rest are considered synonyms or hybrids.

These flowers live in many different places around the world. Most species live in western Eurasia. There are over 60 confirmed species in that area. New Zealand also has about 40 species that live only there. A few species can be found in North and South America. They can also grow in Papua New Guinea. Genetic studies show they likely started in the Northern Hemisphere. Then, they spread to the Southern Hemisphere in one big event.

People use the forget-me-not as a special symbol. In the United Kingdom, it represents the Alzheimer's Society. It is also used to help people notice dementia. In Germany, the flower helps people remember soldiers from wars. The Armenian genocide also uses a special flower design. This design has five petals to show five continents. In art, the flower represents everlasting love. A German legend says a knight tossed blue flowers to his lady. He shouted "Forget-me-not" as he fell into a river.
