Dianthus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Dianthus is a large group of flowering plants. There are about 340 different species. Most grow in Europe and Asia. Some grow in Africa. One kind even lives in the cold North.

Many people know these plants by other names. Some are called carnations. Others are called pinks or sweet william. Most have five petals. These petals are often pink. One kind has yellow petals with a purple center. Many species have a strong, spicy smell.

These plants are food for some insects. Small worms, called larvae, eat them. Some tiny bugs eat only Dianthus plants.

People have grown these flowers in gardens for a long time. Since 1717, people have made many new kinds. They come in white, pink, yellow, and red. You can find them in many shapes. Some grow in big clumps. Others stay low to the ground. In Japan, one kind is a symbol for a traditional woman. In Somerset, one kind is a county flower.
