Dianthus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Dianthus is a large group of flowering plants. There are about 340 different species in this group. Most of them grow in Europe and Asia. You can also find some in North Africa and southern Africa. One special kind, called D. repens, lives in arctic North America.

People know these flowers by many different names. Some people call them carnations. Others call them pinks or sweet william. Most of these plants have five petals. These petals are often pink, but one kind has yellow petals with a purple center. Many of these plants also have a strong and spicy smell.

These plants have a very specific way they grow. Most are herbaceous perennials, which means they live for many years. Some are annuals or biennials instead. Some plants grow into low subshrubs with woody stems at the bottom. The leaves are usually simple and grow in pairs opposite each other. They are often a grey-green or blue-green color.

The petals often have a frilled edge. This edge looks like a zigzag pattern. This is why the color pink might be named after the flower. The word "pink" can mean to decorate something with a punched pattern.

Nature uses these plants to feed many living things. The larvae of some moths use Dianthus as food. These include the cabbage moth and the large yellow underwing. Three types of tiny bugs called Coleophora case-bearers eat only Dianthus. One of these bugs, C. musculella, eats only the species D. superbus.

Humans have also loved these plants for a long time. Since the year 1717, people have bred them to make new kinds. They have made thousands of varieties for gardens and flower shops. These flowers can be white, pink, yellow, or red.

There are many groups of Dianthus for gardeners to choose from. Border carnations are hardy and grow to large sizes. Perpetual flowering carnations are grown under glass to bloom all year. Malmaison carnations have a very strong clove fragrance. Old-fashioned pinks grow in mounds of blue-green leaves. Modern pinks often bloom two or three times each year. Alpine pinks grow low to the ground in rock gardens.

Over 100 varieties have even won a special award from the Royal Horticultural Society.

These flowers are important in many different cultures. In the language of flowers, they stand for boldness. The Cheddar pink is the county flower of Somerset. In Japan, the flower D. japonicus is the official flower of Hiratsuka. Another kind, D. superbus, is used in a Japanese term to describe a traditional ideal woman.

The name Dianthus actually comes from the Greek words for "flower of Zeus." This name was used by an ancient Greek botanist named Theophrastus. It is a name that connects these flowers to history and myth.
