The flowers grow in small groups called cymes. They can grow alone or in groups of up to five. Most flowers are about 3 to 5 cm wide. They have petals with delicate, fringed edges. They also have a radial symmetry, which means they look the same from all sides.

People have known about these flowers for a very long time. Greek literature mentioned them 2,000 years ago. A Greek botanist named Theophrastus gave them the name dianthus. This name uses the Greek words for "divine" and "flower."

The name carnation might come from the Latin word for a wreath or crown. This is because people used them in Greek and Roman ceremonies. Later, Carl Linnaeus described the plant in his book in 1753. He gave it the official name we use today.

Carnations grow in many different colors. The original wild color is a bright pinkish-purple. People have grown many new types, called cultivars, in red, pink, yellow, white, and green.

However, they do not grow blue naturally. In 1996, a company named Florigene used genetic engineering to change this. They took genes from petunias and snapdragons to make a blue-mauve flower called Moondust. They also made a violet variety called Moonshade in 1998. Wild carnations are mostly found in the Mediterranean. This includes places like Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece.

These flowers carry many special meanings around the world. In China, they are common at weddings. In the United States, the red carnation is the state flower of Ohio. This honors President William McKinley, who loved wearing them.

In Portugal, red carnations were part of the Carnation Revolution in 1974. On Mother's Day, many people wear them to show love. Anna Jarvis chose the white carnation for this holiday in 1907. She wanted to show the pure love of a mother. Different colors can show different feelings, like admiration or regret.
