Anthurium is a very large group of flowering plants. It is the biggest genus in the arum family. There are about 1,000 different species in this group. You can find these plants in the Americas. They live from northern Mexico down to northern Argentina. They also grow in parts of the Caribbean.

Some people call them tailflowers or flamingo flowers. Others call them pigtail plants or laceleaf. These plants can grow in many ways. Some are terrestrial, which means they grow in the ground. Others are epiphytes. These plants grow on other plants instead of in soil.

These plants have a very special way of blooming. The flowers are tiny and grow on a spike called a spadix. This spadix can look like a long spike or a club. It can even be shaped like a globe. The flowers are held in close spirals on this spike. Beneath the spadix is a part called a spathe. The spathe is a type of bract, or leaf-like part. It can be shaped like a lance. It might lay flat or curve like a hood over the flowers.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. In 1860, people knew of 183 species. A man named Heinrich Wilhelm Schott defined them in a book. He put them into 28 different sections. In 1905, the genus was revised again. This new study described 18 sections. Later, in 1983, the genus was divided into many specific sections. These include names like Urospadix and Pachyneurium.

Many people like to grow Anthurium as houseplants. They grow well in shady spots with moist soil. Some species have very pretty leaves. Anthurium clarinervium has large, dark green leaves. These leaves have silvery white veins. Breeders work hard to make new types. They focus on the colors of the spathe. Only two species have bright red spathes. These are Anthurium scherzerianum and Anthurium andraeanum.

It is important to be careful with these plants. Every part of the plant is toxic. This includes the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds. They are unsafe for cats, dogs, and even horses. The plants contain calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals can cause a lot of pain. They can make the mouth swell or cause vomiting. It is best to keep them away from pets.
