They include about 1,800 different species. Many of these plants live in dry parts of Southern Africa.

Some species look like pebbles or gems. People call these "living stones."

Many plants in this family are called ice plants. This name comes from tiny, shiny parts on their leaves. These parts are called epidermal bladder cells. They make the plant look like it is covered in ice.

Some of these plants are useful to people. You can eat the leaves of some species in salads. One plant is called New Zealand spinach.

Another plant, Carpobrotus edulis, was used to hold soil in place.

These plants have a special way to spread seeds. Their seed pods use "jet action" when they get wet. This means the pods spray the seeds out. This helps new plants grow in new places. Most of these plants grow in the Succulent Karoo. This is a very dry region in Africa.
