Cactus

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A cactus is a special plant. Most live in dry places.

Cacti are succulents. This means they have fleshy parts to store water. Most cacti use their stems to hold this water. Many cacti do not have leaves. Instead, they have spines. Spines are actually modified leaves. They protect the plant from animals. Spines also help by giving shade and slowing air flow. This helps the plant keep its water.

Spines grow from tiny spots called areoles. These are very small, short branches.

Areoles also grow flowers. These flowers are often shaped like tubes.

Cacti have many shapes. Some look like tall trees. Others look like small balls.

Some even grow on trees in tropical forests.

To save water, cacti use a special way to make food. This is called CAM. This process helps them breathe at night. They take in air when it is cool. This keeps water from escaping in the hot sun.

Cacti can be very big or very small. The tallest can reach 49 feet. The smallest is only about 0.4 inches wide.
