Agave plants live in dry parts of the Americas.

They are succulents. This means they have thick leaves that store water. This helps them live in hot places. The leaves often have sharp teeth on the edges. They also have a sharp spike at the tip. These spikes stop animals from eating them.

Inside the leaves, the plant has strong fibers. People have used these tough fibers to make thread. They even used the spikes as sewing needles.

Most agaves grow very slowly. Some can live for 60 years before they bloom. When they do bloom, they grow a tall stem. This stem is called a mast. The stem carries many small flowers. Most agaves are monocarpic. This means the main plant flowers only once and then dies. However, new small plants called pups can grow near the roots. These pups help the family continue.
