These plants live in dry places. Scientists call them xerophytes. This means they are built for dry living.

Some yuccas are small shrubs. Others grow into big trees. The Joshua tree is a giant yucca. It can grow very tall.

Yuccas have long, pointed leaves. The leaves grow in a circle called a rosette. Most leaves are stiff and tough. About half of all species have fibers in their leaves. People use these fibers to make things. They make cords, baskets, and sandals.

These plants have a close bond with yucca moths. This is called mutualism. This means both the plant and the moth help each other. The female moth moves pollen to the flowers. This helps the plant make seeds. Then, the moth lays her eggs in the plant. The seeds become food for the moth larvae.
