Droseraceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some plants eat bugs to help them grow. These plants are in the Droseraceae family. This family has about 180 different species. You can find them on almost every continent.

Most of these plants are sundews. Sundews use flypaper traps to catch food. They have tiny hairs on their leaves. These hairs make a very sticky juice. It looks like drops of dew. Insects smell the juice and get stuck. The plant then curls its leaf to eat the bug.

Other plants in this family use snap-traps. A snap-trap is a leaf that shuts very fast. The Venus flytrap is a famous snap-trap plant. It lives on land.

The waterwheel plant is also a snap-trap plant. It lives in the water. It is smaller and faster than the Venus flytrap. It only needs one hair to touch to close its trap. The Venus flytrap needs two hairs to touch. These plants catch bugs to get nitrogen. This helps them live in poor soil like bogs.
