The Venus flytrap is a small plant.

It grows in wet lands in North and South Carolina. These areas are often poor in nutrients. Because the soil lacks food, the plant eats bugs to get what it needs.

The plant uses its leaves to catch prey. These leaves look like tiny jaws. Inside the jaws are tiny hairs called trigger hairs.

When a bug touches a hair, the plant gets ready. To save power, the trap only snaps shut if a second hair is touched within 20 seconds. This way, the plant does not waste energy on raindrops or leaves.

The plant also has a heat sensor. This helps the plant stay safe during forest fires. Most of its food comes from ants and spiders.

Today, there are fewer flytraps in the wild than there used to be. Experts say the number of wild plants has dropped by more than 93% since 1979.
