Utricularia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bladderworts are very special plants. They belong to a group called Utricularia. Most plants have roots, leaves, and stems. But bladderworts are different. They do not have a root system. Instead, they grow long, thin parts called stolons. These stolons grow under water or in wet soil.

All bladderworts are carnivorous. This means they eat small living things. They use tiny, hollow bags called bladders to catch food. These bladders act like suction cups.

How do the traps work? The bladder stays under negative pressure. This means it has a vacuum inside. When a tiny bug touches the trigger hairs, the door opens. The water and the bug are sucked into the bladder. This happens in only ten to fifteen milliseconds!

Bladderworts live almost everywhere. You can find them on every continent except Antarctica. Some live in ponds. Others grow in wet moss on trees. They also grow beautiful flowers. These flowers can look like orchids or snapdragons.
