Bladderworts are a very special group of carnivorous plants. Scientists call this group Utricularia. There are about 233 different species in this genus. These plants live in fresh water or wet soil. You can find them on almost every continent. The only place they do not grow is Antarctica. They are very useful for learning about nature. Many people grow them to see their beautiful flowers.

All bladderworts use tiny traps to catch food. These traps are shaped like little bags or bladders. The traps work using a very fast suction method. First, the bladder stays under negative pressure. This creates a vacuum inside the little bag. When a tiny creature touches the trigger hairs, the door opens. The water and the prey are sucked inside instantly. This whole thing happens in only ten to fifteen milliseconds.

People have studied these plants for a long time. In 1875, Mary Treat wrote about plants that eat animals. Many experts study them today. Botanists like Peter Taylor and Francis Ernest Lloyd have written about them. They say these traps are the most sophisticated in the plant kingdom. Some people once thought the bladders were just for floating. They did not know the plants were actually hunting.

Bladderworts grow in many different ways. About 80% of them live on land in wet soil. The other 20% live in the water. Some species, like U. vulgaris, can grow very long. They can form branching rafts up to one metre long. In South America, some grow on trees in wet moss. These are called epiphytes. They have very large and showy flowers.

These plants are very different from the ones in your garden. Most plants have clear roots, leaves, and stems. Bladderworts do not have a root system. They use long, thin parts called stolons instead. Their flowers are often very pretty to look at. Some look like yellow snapdragons. Others look like colorful orchids. They are truly amazing living things.
