Duckweeds are tiny flowering plants that float on fresh water.

They live in still or slow-moving places like wetlands. These plants belong to the subfamily Lemnoideae. They are part of the Araceae family. Some people call them water lentils or water lenses. They are very simple in their structure. They do not have obvious stems or leaves. Instead, they have a small body called a thallus. This thallus is only a few cells thick. It has air pockets called aerenchyma. These pockets help the plant float on the surface.

These plants have a very interesting way it works to grow. Most duckweeds reproduce by asexual budding. This is called vegetative reproduction. A small part called a meristem sits at the base of the plant. This part makes new copies of the plant. Sometimes, they produce tiny flowers for sexual reproduction. These flowers have two stamens and a pistil. The Wolffia genus has the smallest flower in the world. It is only 0.3 mm long. When they reproduce this way, they make a fruit called a utricle. The seeds grow in a bag with air. This air helps the seeds float.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. People suspected they were related to the Araceae family in 1876. It was hard to prove this for many years. In 1995, new studies helped confirm their place in that family. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy funded a project to study them. They wanted to sequence the genome of the giant duckweed, Spirodela polyrhiza. This research was a priority in 2009. Scientists published their results in February 2014. They wanted to see how the plants grow so fast.

There are many important facts about how duckweed lives. They love water that has many nutrients. They can spread by sticking to the feathers of birds. They also move through flooding or moving water. Duckweed is a great food for fish and waterfowl. It is very high in protein. Some people in Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar eat it. It is also grown as a vegetable in Israel. The plants produce more protein per square meter than soybeans. They also have vitamins like B12 and minerals.

Duckweed can help humans in many ways. Researchers think they could be a source of clean energy. They grow very fast and make much starch. They can double their size in four and a half days. They also help clean the water. This is called bioremediation. They soak up extra nitrogen and phosphates. This helps clean up pollution from farms or cities. NASA even thinks they could grow food on Mars. They are a top candidate for food in space projects.
