It is a perennial aquatic plant, which means it lives in water for many years. This plant is native to tropical and subtropical South America. It has thick, glossy leaves that can rise above the water surface. The plant stays afloat using spongy, bulb-like stalks at its base. It also has pretty flowers that are mostly lavender or pink in color.

This plant has a very fast way of growing. It can double in size in only one to two weeks. The plant can multiply its number by over a hundredfold in just 23 days. It reproduces by using runners, or stolons, to make daughter plants. It can also make thousands of seeds every single year. These seeds are very tough and can stay alive for more than 28 years.

Many people wonder how the plant spread so far from South America. One famous story says it arrived in the United States in 1884. This happened during the World's Fair in New Orleans. Some say a Japanese delegation gave the plants away as souvenirs. They may have collected them from the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Other experts think the plants were first grown in garden ponds. Eventually, they escaped into the local waterways.

In many places, the water hyacinth is a serious pest. It forms huge mats that can block boats and fishing. These mats can even make small lakes dry out. When the plants die, they rot on the bottom of the water. This process uses up the oxygen that fish need to breathe. This can cause fish to die in the water. In India, the plant is sometimes called the "terror of Bengal."

Cleaning up these plants is a very hard job. People sometimes use machines called aquatic weed harvesters to collect them.

Removing a million tons of these plants would take 75 large trucks every day for a whole year. Even after they are removed, the plants must be moved to dumping sites. When they decompose, they release gases like carbon dioxide and methane. It is important to watch these plants so they do not hurt the water.
