Most are found in fresh or salty water. They live in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Some live in permanent lakes and rivers. These fish can live for two or three years.

Other killifish live in temporary ponds. These are called "annuals." They live for nine months or less. Their eggs can survive if the water dries up. This helps them stay safe until it rains again. Some fish, like the African turquoise killifish, live only three to nine months.

Scientists study these fish to learn about aging.

Killifish eat many things. Most eat small worms or insect larvae. Some eat plants. Others are predators that eat other fish.

Many people keep them in tanks at home. They have bright colors. Some fish, like the golden topminnow, can jump out of tanks. You must use a lid to keep them safe.
