These fish have a funny name. A scientist named Carl Hubbs gave them this name. He saw males circling each other. They looked like puppies at play. This was actually a way to fight for space.

Many pupfish live in fresh or salty water. They eat algae, old plants, and bugs. Some pupfish change very fast. On San Salvador Island, they changed to eat different foods. One kind eats scales from other fish. Another kind has a special jaw to eat snails.

Some pupfish live in very hot water. In Death Valley, some live in 114 °F water. The Devils Hole pupfish is very rare. It lives in a deep pool in Nevada. These fish live in 94 °F water. Their numbers have gone down since 1995. In 2013, there were only 35 to 68 fish left.
