Pupfish

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Pupfish are a group of small fish in the family Cyprinodontidae. They are famous because they live in very extreme and isolated places. Most of these fish live in North America, South America, or the Caribbean. As of August 2006, people knew of 120 different species and 9 subspecies. Sadly, some pupfish species are already extinct. Many of the living species are now on protected lists because they are at risk.

These fish have a very interesting way of living and eating. Most pupfish live in fresh water or brackish water, which is a mix of fresh and salt water. Their diet usually includes algae, decaying plants, and insects. Some species have changed to fill special roles, called ecological niches. On San Salvador Island, one species even eats the scales of other fish. Another species has a special jaw to eat snails and tiny creatures called ostracods. This allows different kinds of pupfish to live together in the same lakes.

A scientist named Carl L. Hubbs helped give these fish their name. He was a famous ichthyologist, which is a scientist who studies fish. He noticed the male fish circling and tussling with each other. This behavior looked like puppies at play, so he called them pupfish. However, this was not actually play. It was aggressive behavior as the males fought over their territory. He was one of the first people to study them closely.

Some pupfish live in places that would be too hard for other fish. In Death Valley, some pupfish can live in water that is 114 °F. The Devils Hole pupfish is a very rare species found in Nevada. These fish live in water that stays at 94 °F. Their numbers have been dropping steadily since 1995. In 2013, there were only about 35 to 68 of them left in that spot. They are now one of the rarest fish in the entire world.

History shows us how these fish change over long periods of time. Long ago, a huge glacial lake called Lake Manly covered 620 square miles. As that lake dried up, it turned into smaller ponds. The pupfish became separated in these different ponds and began to evolve differently. On San Salvador Island, they evolve much faster than other pupfish. In Mexico, five species used to live in Lake Chichancanab. They are now gone from the wild because of an invasive fish called the African tilapia.
