There are 226 different species in this group. They grow in the Andes Mountains. They also grow in southern Central America.

Some Puya plants are very big. One type is called Puya raimondii.

It is the largest plant in its family. The plant parts can grow 3 meters tall. Its flower spike can reach 10 meters! Other species have flower spikes from 1 to 4 meters tall.

Many Puya plants are monocarpic. This means the parent plant dies after it makes flowers and seeds.

Scientists divide the group into two parts. One part is called Puya. The other part is called Puyopsis. You can tell them apart by their flower parts.

People in Chile use some Puya plants for food. They call them chagual.

They make salads from the stem or young leaves. The name Puya comes from a Mapuche word. It means "point."
