Polylepis

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Polylepis are special trees and shrubs. They grow in the Andes mountains of South America. These plants live in very high places. Some grow above 5,000 meters. This makes them some of the highest trees in the world.

These trees have a unique look. Their stems and branches are often twisted and crooked. This happens because of the cold and windy weather. The name Polylepis comes from Greek words. It means "many scales." This describes their bark. The bark has many thin layers. These layers act like a warm blanket. They protect the tree from frost and fire.

Most trees use insects to make seeds. Polylepis is different. It uses wind pollination. This is a way to make seeds using the wind. Since insects are rare in high mountains, the wind helps a lot. The flowers do not have bright colors or sweet smells. They do not need to attract bugs. The wind carries the pollen instead. The seeds are also moved by the wind. Some birds may help by carrying fruit in their feathers.

Many people use these trees for wood. This can hurt the small forest patches. Groups are now working to plant more trees to help.
