Mountains have many different layers. These layers are called life zones.

As you climb higher, the air gets colder. This happens because of a drop in air pressure. This change shapes what lives on the mountain.

At middle heights, you find montane forests. These areas have moderate temperatures and lots of rain. Dense forests of pine or oak grow here.

As you go higher, you reach the subalpine zone. This area is just below the tree line. The wind is very strong here. Trees often grow in a twisted way. This is called krummholz, which means crooked wood.

These trees may be a thousand years old.

The tree line is where trees can no longer grow. Above this line is the alpine zone. This area is very cold and windy. Only small plants live here, like moss or grass.

Some plants grow in low clumps called cushion plants. This helps them hide from the wind. These mountain lands are very special. They often have plants that live nowhere else.
