Steppe

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A steppe is a wide land of grass and shrubs. You will not see many forests here. Trees mostly grow near rivers or lakes. A steppe is not a desert. However, it is too dry to grow a forest. This happens because of the amount of rain.

The weather on a steppe can change a lot. Summers can be very hot. Winters can be very cold. In some places, the temperature changes a lot between day and night. In Mongolia, it can be warm during the day. Then, it can freeze at night.

There are many kinds of steppes. Some are cold steppes. The Great Steppe is the largest one. It covers parts of Europe and Asia. This area helped spread horses and the wheel. Other steppes are subtropical. These are found in dry areas near the sea. You can find steppes in many places. They are in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are also in South America and Australia.
