Rain shadow

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever wondered why some places are deserts? It might be because of a rain shadow.

This happens when mountains block wet air.

Wind carries moisture from oceans toward land. This air hits a mountain and must rise. We call this orographic lifting. As the air goes up, it expands and cools. The moisture turns into clouds and rain. This falls on the windward side. This is the side facing the wind.

By the time the air reaches the peak, it is dry. The air then moves down the leeward side. This is the side facing away from the wind. As the air sinks, it gets squeezed and warms up. This warm air can soak up more moisture. This creates a dry area called a rain shadow.

Many places have this effect. The Atlas Mountains make the Sahara Desert very dry. In Asia, the Himalayas help make the Gobi Desert. Even in the UK, mountains create dry spots. These shadows often make shrublands or deserts.
