Polylepis

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Polylepis is a special group of 44 tree and shrub species. These plants live in the high Andes mountains of South America. They grow in places like Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Chile. In different areas, people call them by many names. In Peru, they are known as queñual or queñoa. In Bolivia, they are called kewiña. In Ecuador, they are yagual, and in Argentina, they are tabaquillo. These plants are very important because they live where most trees cannot. They are the highest naturally occurring woody plants in the world. Some species grow in woodlands even above 5,000 meters.

These trees have a very interesting way of staying alive. Their name comes from Greek words meaning "many scales." This refers to their thick, reddish bark that peels off in many layers. This bark works like a warm blanket. It protects the tree from nightly frost and intense daytime sun. The layers also help protect the tree from fire. The bark might even stop moss from growing on the branches. Because the weather is so windy and cold, the branches often look twisted or crooked. This shape helps them survive in harsh, dry places.

Most flowering plants use insects to help them make seeds. Polylepis is different because it uses wind pollination. In the high mountains, there are not many insects. Instead, the wind carries the pollen from one plant to another. These flowers do not have bright colors or sweet smells. They do not need to attract bugs with nectar. The flowers often hang down in long clusters. The fruit is also moved mostly by the wind. Sometimes, birds might help by carrying fruit in their feathers.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. They use small parts of the plant to tell the species apart. They look at the size and shape of the tiny leaflets. They also look at tiny hairs called trichomes. A scientist named Torsten Eriksson and his team studied them in 2003. They found that Polylepis is closely related to a plant called Acaena. These plants changed over a long time due to climate shifts. This helped many different species grow and spread across the mountains.

Today, these mountain forests face some hard jobs. People sometimes cut or burn the trees for wood and building materials. This breaks the forests into small, lonely pieces. This can be hard for the animals that live there. However, many people are working to help. In 2000, a biologist named Constantino Aucca started an organization called Ecoan. They have planted 4.5 million plants in 16 protected areas. They work with 37 different Andean communities to grow more trees.
