Boraginaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Boraginaceae family includes many plants. You might know them as borage or forget-me-nots.

These plants have many different looks. Their leaves can be smooth or have teeth. Most of these plants have hairy leaves. These hairs are made of silicon dioxide and calcium carbonate.

These hard parts can make skin itch. This can cause a rash for some people.

The flowers come in many colors. They can be white, yellow, pink, or blue. Some flowers change color as they age. They might turn from red to blue. This uses substances called anthocyanins. This change tells bees the flower is old. It tells them the nectar is gone.

Bees are the main helpers for these plants. They move from flower to flower to help them grow. Many flowers start with a coiling shape. Scientists call this a scorpioid cyme. The fruit is a small, fleshy part called a drupe. Famous plants in this group include comfrey and lungwort.
