Some members are small herbs. Others are shrubs or large trees. Many of these plants have a strong smell. This scent comes from pellucid glands. These are tiny oil glands found in the leaves.

Most plants in this group have flowers with four or five parts. These flowers are often visited by insects. The fruits can look many different ways. Some are berries, while others are capsules.

The Citrus genus is very important to people. It includes fruits like the orange and lemon. You might also eat a lime or a grapefruit.
