Rubiaceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Rubiaceae family is a very large group of plants. It has about 14,200 different species. These plants live almost everywhere on Earth. You can find them in many places, but most live in warm, wet areas.

These plants come in many shapes. Some are tall trees. Others are small bushes or herbs. Most have leaves that grow in pairs on the stem. They also have small parts called stipules between the leaves. Some plants even have tiny holes in their leaves. These holes hold bacteria that help protect the plant.

The flowers are often shaped like tubes. They can be white, yellow, red, or even blue. Many flowers make nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid. It helps pull in insects like bees to help the plant grow.

Humans use these plants in many ways. The Coffea genus makes the coffee we drink. The Cinchona tree makes a medicine called quinine. Other plants make bright dyes to color clothes. Some are even grown just to look pretty in gardens.
