Gardenia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gardenias are a large group of flowering plants. They belong to the coffee family. These plants grow in many warm places. You can find them in Africa and Asia. They also grow in Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Some gardenias are small bushes. Other kinds can grow into tall trees. Some trees in New Guinea reach 30 meters tall. The leaves can feel thick like leather. Other leaves may feel thin like paper.

Most gardenias have beautiful flowers. They are often white, cream, or pale yellow. These flowers have a very strong scent. The smell may be even stronger at night. This helps moths find them. The flowers are hermaphrodite. This means each flower has both male and female parts.

People use gardenias in many ways. The fruit can make a yellow dye. This dye is used on cloth and food. In China, the fruit is used in medicine. Some people grow gardenias in their homes. You must keep the air moist for them. Do not let water touch the flowers. If it does, they may turn brown.
