life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ixora is a group of many plants.

There are about 544 different types. Some are small shrubs. Others are evergreen trees. Evergreen means they stay green all year. Most of these plants live in warm, tropical places. Many grow in Asia. You can also find them in Florida. In Florida, people call them West Indian jasmine.

These plants have thick, leathery leaves. The leaves are 3 to 6 inches long. In the summer, they make big clusters of tiny flowers.

In warm lands, they can bloom all year. Some people use them to make hedges. They are also used in medicine.

Ixora plants like soil that is acidic. This means the soil has a certain type of chemistry. People also use them for bonsai. Bonsai is a way to grow tiny trees in pots. In Brazil, a fungus can cause spots on the leaves. In Taiwan, other fungi also cause leaf spots.

These plants are very popular in many gardens.
