Ixora

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ixora is a large genus of flowering plants. These plants belong to the family Rubiaceae. They are the only genus found in the tribe Ixoreae. This group includes about 544 different species. Most Ixora plants are tropical evergreen trees or shrubs. This means they stay green throughout the year. They are found in many tropical and subtropical areas globally. However, their center of diversity is located in Tropical Asia.

The physical structure of Ixora is very distinct. These plants possess leathery leaves. These leaves usually measure between 3 and 6 inches in length. During the summer months, the plants produce large clusters. These clusters are made of many tiny flowers. In tropical climates, the blooming process is even more frequent. These plants can flower all year round. They grow best when they are planted in acidic soil.

Humans have many different names for these plants. In Florida, they are often called West Indian jasmine. Other common names include jungle flame and jungle geranium. You might also hear them called cruz de Malta. In other regions, they have names like rangan, pan, or siantan. The name Ixora itself has a deep history. It is a Latinized version of the Sanskrit word Ishwara. This word is one of the names for the Hindu god Shiva.

History shows how people have observed these plants for centuries. Hendrik van Rheede noted these flowers in the Malabar region. He called them schetti. He also gave the name Ixora coccinea to one species. Later, the scientist Carl Linnaeus formally created the genus in 1753. This helped organize how botanists study the plant family.

Ixora species are important in many cultural systems. In many tropical regions, they are used in Hindu worship. They also play a role in ayurveda. This is a system of Indian folk medicine. Because of these uses, they are highly valued in many societies. People also use them for practical gardening. They are popular choices for creating hedges in South East Asia. Some people even use them for the art of bonsai.

Scientists also study the health of Ixora plants. They look at how different organisms affect them. In Brazil, a fungal species called Pseudocercospora ixoricola was discovered. This fungus causes leaf spots on the Ixora coccinea species. In 2018, researchers in Taiwan conducted a fungal study. They found two specific fungi affecting Ixora in Taiwan. These were named Pseudopestalotiopsis ixorae and Pseudopestalotiopsis taiwanensis. Both caused leaf spots on these popular garden plants.

There is a massive variety within this single genus. Many specific species have been identified by botanists. Some examples include Ixora albersii and Ixora backeri. Other species include Ixora chinensis and Ixora elongata. There are also species like Ixora lawsonii and Ixora nigerica. The list of known species is quite long. This diversity helps the genus survive in many different tropical environments.
