It is the part that makes seeds. Most people call it the female part of the flower. It makes megaspores. These megaspores grow into things that make egg cells.

A gynoecium is made of one or more pistils. A pistil has three main parts. The bottom part is the ovary. It holds the ovules, which are the tiny parts that become seeds.

Above the ovary is the style. This is a pillar-like stalk. At the top is the stigma. The stigma catches pollen. It is often sticky or feathery to help.

Sometimes, pistils are joined together. We call this being syncarpous. If the pistils stay separate, they are apocarpous.

Some flowers have only one carpel. A carpel is a part that holds the ovules. After pollen reaches the ovary, seeds grow. The gynoecium then turns into a fruit. The fruit protects the seeds and helps them spread.
