It helps plants make seeds through a way called reproduction. Each grain is like a tiny living thing. It contains cells that make sperm.

To stay safe, pollen has a very tough outer wall. This wall is made of sporopollenin. This strong material protects the pollen while it moves.

Some pollen grains are very small. Forget-me-not pollen is only 0.005 mm wide. Corn pollen is much larger.

Pollen moves in different ways. Some plants use the wind to move their pollen. These plants are called anemophilous. Other plants use insects to move pollen. This is called pollination. When pollen lands on a flower, it grows a pollen tube.

This tube carries the sperm to a part called the ovule. This helps the plant make a new seed. Scientists study pollen to learn about the past. They use it to see what plants lived long ago.
