Flowers help plants make new life. They are the reproductive parts of flowering plants. Most flowers have four levels of parts.

First, there are sepals. These are green, leaf-like parts that protect the flower. Next are petals. Petals are often bright or sweet to attract pollinators. These are animals like birds or insects. Then come the stamens. These are the male parts that make pollen. Finally, there is the gynoecium. This is the female part that receives pollen.

Pollination happens when pollen moves to the female part. This can happen by wind or water. It can also happen when animals carry it. After this, fertilisation occurs. This is when the sex cells join together. This step makes a seed. The female part then turns into a fruit. The fruit protects the seed.

Flowers are very diverse. They come in many shapes and sizes. Some are tiny, like duckweed. Others are very large, like the corpse flower. Flowers first appeared a long time ago. They lived in the Jurassic period. Many plants today have flowers.
