Flower

Flowers are the amazing reproductive parts of flowering plants. They are much more than just pretty decorations for a garden. Their main job is to help a plant make new life. This process helps the whole species survive and grow. When flowers grow in a group, we call that an inflorescence.

Some plants, like sunflowers, are actually many tiny flowers grouped together. These special clusters are known as pseudanthia. Flowers can be tiny or they can be huge. They are a key part of almost every ecosystem on Earth.

A typical flower has four circular levels of parts. First, the sepals act like small, tough leaves. They protect the flower while it is still developing. Next are the petals, which are often bright or scented. These attract pollinators like birds and insects to the plant.

Then come the stamens, which are the male parts. They produce pollen using tiny sacs called anthers. Finally, there is the gynoecium, which is the female part. It includes a stigma to catch pollen and an ovary to hold the eggs.

How does a flower make a seed? It all starts with pollination. This is when pollen moves from the male part to the female part. Wind, water, or animals can move the pollen.

Some plants use cross-pollination to move pollen between different plants. This helps create genetic diversity, which makes the species stronger. After pollination, fertilisation happens when the sex cells fuse together. This tiny event causes a seed to grow inside the flower. The female part then changes into a fruit to protect the seed.

Flowers have been around for a very long time. They first evolved during the Jurassic period. This was between 150 and 190 million years ago.

Because flowers are so good at reproducing, they replaced many other types of plants. Today, flowering plants dominate most of the world's ecosystems. Humans have also used flowers for thousands of years. We use them for food, medicine, perfumes, and even decoration.

They are also very important in art and many cultures.

You can see how flowers connect to the world around you every day. Some flowers are as small as duckweed. Others, like the corpse flower, are incredibly large.

You might see a bird eating fruit and spreading seeds elsewhere. This is one way plants use fruit to move their seeds. Even the wind can carry seeds to new places to grow. Flowers come in many shapes and colors. Some have perfect symmetry, while others are irregular. This variety helps them work with different pollinators in nature.
