Sepal

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A flower is made of many different parts. One important part is the sepal. Sepals are usually green in color. They are actually modified leaves that sit at the base of a flower. When you see all the sepals together, they are called the calyx. The calyx and the petals together form the perianth.

Sepals have very important jobs to do. First, they act like a shield for the flower bud. They protect the soft parts inside while the flower is still growing. Once the flower blooms, the sepals often help support the petals. Some sepals can even make food for the plant. They do this through photosynthesis, just like regular leaves. However, they do this more slowly because they have fewer spaces for gas exchange.

People have studied these parts for a long time. A man named Noël Martin Joseph de Necker coined the term sepalum in 1790. The word sepal comes from the Greek word skepē, which means covering. The word calyx comes from a Greek word meaning bud or husk. In the past, people sometimes used these two words to mean the same thing.

Every plant has its own special way of growing sepals. We can count them to learn about the plant. This count is called merosity. For many eudicot flowers, the merosity is four or five. Monocot flowers often have three sepals or a multiple of three. Some sepals are joined together to form a calyx tube. Other sepals might look like tiny scales, teeth, or even ridges.

After a flower is done blooming, the sepals change. Most plants let the calyx wither and fall off. But some plants use them in amazing ways. In the aubergine, the calyx grows along with the fruit. In some species, the calyx grows into a bladder-like shape. This bladder protects the fruit from insects and birds. Other plants even grow thorny sepals to protect their seeds.
