A plant stem is a main structural part of a vascular plant.

It works alongside the roots to keep the plant alive. The stem provides support to hold up leaves, flowers, and fruits. This elevation helps leaves reach the sunlight they need. Stems also act as a storage center for nutrients. They can even produce new living tissue to help the plant grow.

Inside the stem, a system of pipes moves important fluids. This happens through two types of tissue called xylem and phloem. The xylem carries water and minerals from the roots up to the shoots. It uses methods like transpiration pull and root pressure to move the water.

The phloem tissue distributes food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant. A layer called the cambium sits between these two tissues. The cambium helps create new xylem and phloem cells.

Stems have a very specific way they are built. They are divided into small sections called nodes and internodes. Nodes are the specific points where leaves or twigs attach to the stem.

The internode is the space that sits between two nodes. Sometimes, tiny buds called axillary buds grow at these nodes. These buds can eventually grow into new branches or flowers. Some plants even grow extra roots, called adventitious roots, directly from these nodes.

Stems come in many different shapes and sizes. The woody stem of a large tree is called a trunk.

In some plants, the stem stays underground. For example, a potato is a swollen underground stem called a tuber. Other stems are specialized for different jobs. A cactus pad is actually a flattened stem used for photosynthesis.

Some stems, called runners, grow along the ground to help the plant reproduce.

Humans use stems for many important things every day. We eat several types of stems as food, such as asparagus.

Sugarcane stems are a huge source of sugar for us. We even get spices like cinnamon from the bark of tree trunks. Wood from many stems is used to build houses and make furniture. It is also used to create paper, boats, and even musical instruments. Stems are truly essential for both plants and people.
