Vascular tissue

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Vascular tissue is a very important part of many plants. It is a system that moves things inside a plant. This tissue is made of more than one kind of cell. Together, these cells form the vascular tissue system. Plants use this system to stay healthy and strong. It helps them grow in many different ways.

This system works a lot like the pipes in a house. It uses two main parts called xylem and phloem. The xylem moves water and minerals through the plant. The phloem moves nutrients to where they are needed. These cells are often long and slender. They connect end-to-end just like sections of a pipe.

Plants grow these tissues in special ways. New tissue forms at the growing tips of the plant. It stays connected to the old tissue as it grows. Most plants keep these parts in bundles called vascular bundles. These bundles also have cells for support and protection. In a stem, the xylem is usually near the center. The phloem stays closer to the outside of the stem.

Some plants can grow much wider over time. They use a special layer called the vascular cambium. This layer makes new xylem and phloem cells. This process makes the plant grow stout instead of long. In trees, this creates wood through secondary growth. A second layer called the cork cambium also helps. It makes thick cork cells to protect the plant surface. These cork cells also help the plant keep its water.

You can see how this works in leaves too. In a leaf, the bundles sit in the spongy middle part. The xylem stays toward the top side of the leaf. The phloem stays toward the bottom side of the leaf. This is why you often see aphids on the underside. They are looking for the sugars in the phloem. This shows how every part of the plant has a job.
