A plant stem is a main part of a plant.

It works like a support beam. It holds up leaves, flowers, and fruit. This helps leaves reach the light.

Stems also act like a system of pipes. They move things through two types of tissue. One is called xylem. Xylem carries water from the roots up to the rest of the plant.

The other is called phloem. Phloem moves food made in the leaves to other parts.

Stems have special spots called nodes. This is where leaves or twigs attach. The space between nodes is called an internode.

Some stems are very big and woody. We call the stem of a tree a trunk.

Other stems grow under the soil. A potato is a type of underground stem called a tuber.

We use stems in many ways. We eat stems like asparagus.

We also use wood from stems to make paper and furniture. Stems even give us spices like cinnamon!
