A bud is a tiny, undeveloped part of a plant.

It is often called an embryonic shoot. These shoots usually grow at the tip of a stem or in the axil of a leaf. An axil is the space where a leaf meets the stem. Some buds stay in a dormant state for a long time. This means they are resting and not growing yet. Other buds might start to grow into a shoot right away. Buds can also be used to grow flowers instead of leaves.

Many plants use special covers to keep their buds safe. These covers are called scales, which are actually modified leaves. In cold or temperate climates, these scales wrap tightly around the delicate parts. Some scales even have a gummy substance to add more protection. When a bud finally grows, the scales usually fall off. They leave small, horizontal scars on the stem. You can look at these scars to see how old a branch is. Each year of growth ends with a new group of scars.

Scientists use specific names to describe where a bud lives. A terminal bud is found at the very end of a stem. Lateral buds are located on the sides of the stem. Some buds are called adventitious buds because they grow in unexpected places. These might grow on a trunk or even on roots. There are also naked buds that do not have any scales. These buds might have tiny hairs to help protect them instead. Some shrubs like Sumac have these types of naked buds.

Buds can be grouped by what they do for the plant. A vegetative bud contains only parts that will become leaves. A reproductive bud contains only parts that will become flowers. Some buds are mixed and hold both leaves and flowers inside. There are also accessory buds, which are secondary buds. A resting bud forms at the end of a growing season. If a bud waits for many years, it is called a dormant bud. Some plants like the beech have a special way of growing. In these plants, an axillary bud can take over for a terminal bud.

It is fun to realize that some buds are actually food. You might have eaten a very large bud before! A head of cabbage is an exceptionally large terminal bud. Brussels sprouts are another type of bud, but they are lateral buds. You can see many different types of buds in nature. Some buds show a beautiful gradation of colors and shapes. In a buckeye tree, scales can change from brown to green. These scales look very much like real leaves as they unfold.
