It can grow into a leaf or a flower. Some buds are at the tip of a stem. We call these terminal buds. Other buds grow on the sides. These are lateral buds. You can even eat some buds! A head of cabbage is a very large terminal bud. Brussels sprouts are large lateral buds.

Many plants have scales to protect their buds. Scales are actually leaves that changed shape. They wrap tightly around the soft parts. Some scales even have a sticky gum on them. This helps keep the bud safe. When a bud grows, the scales fall off. They leave small scars on the stem. You can count these scars to see how old a branch is.

Some plants have naked buds. These buds do not have scales. They might have many tiny hairs instead. Some buds can also grow in strange places. These are called adventitious buds. They might grow on a trunk or even a root.
