A taproot is a large, central root. It grows straight down into the soil. This main root is often very thick. Many smaller roots sprout out from its sides.

Taproots start from the radicle. The radicle is the first part of a seed to grow. This root can stay for the plant's whole life. Most plants later grow a fibrous root system. These are many small roots that spread out.

Some taproots have different shapes. A conical root is wide at the top. It gets thin at the bottom, like a carrot.

A fusiform root is wide in the middle. A napiform root is very broad at the top. It looks like a top with a small tail.

Many plants use taproots to store food. We eat carrots, radishes, and turnips. Dandelions also have taproots. These roots grow deep and are hard to pull up. If a dandelion root breaks, it may grow back. To stop it, you must cut the root deep in the ground.
