For a mature tree standing 30 to 50 meters tall, the root system can extend horizontally as far as the tree is tall. Interestingly, even with this wide spread, as much as 100% of the roots may stay within the top 50 cm of the soil.
Environmental factors like soil composition play a major role in how these roots grow. The architecture of a taproot is strongly influenced by the characteristics of the ground. For instance, deep and rich soils favor the development of vertical taproots in certain oak species, such as Quercus kelloggii. In contrast, clay soils can promote the growth of multiple taproots rather than a single dominant one. This shows how the physical environment dictates the biological structure of the plant.
From a horticultural perspective, taproots can present unique challenges for gardeners. Because they grow deep very rapidly, they are often difficult to transplant or grow in containers. Any slight obstacle or damage to the main root can stunt the plant or even kill it. Dandelions are a classic example of a weed with a difficult taproot. They are hard to uproot because of their depth. If the taproot breaks off near the surface, the remaining part in the ground can resprout. To control them effectively, the taproot must be severed at least several centimeters below the ground level.
