Taproot

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A taproot is a large and central root. It is the main part of a plant's root system. This root grows straight down into the soil. It is often very thick and tapers at the bottom. Many smaller roots sprout out from its sides. These side roots are called lateral roots.

Some plants use this root to store energy. This makes the root a storage organ. You can eat these roots as vegetables. This includes plants like carrots and turnips.

Taproots grow in a specific way. They start from the radicle of a seed. The radicle is the first part to grow. This becomes the primary root. Then, the primary root branches into secondary roots. These secondary roots branch again into tertiary roots. These can grow into even smaller rootlets.

Most plants do not keep this system forever. The radicle often dies after the seed grows. Then, the plant develops a fibrous root system. This system has many small roots instead of one main one.

Taproots come in three main shapes. A conical root is wide at the top. It gets thinner toward the bottom. A carrot is a good example. A fusiform root is widest in the middle. It tapers at both the top and bottom. A radish has this shape. A napiform root is very broad at the top. It looks like a spinning top. It has a small tail at the bottom. A turnip has a napiform root.

Many different plants use this system. Some trees like oaks and pines start with a taproot. A mature tree might be 30 to 50 meters tall. Its roots can spread out as wide as the tree is tall. However, 100% of the roots might be in the top 50 cm of soil. Soil type changes how roots grow. Deep soil helps oak species like Quercus kelloggii grow vertical roots. Clay soil can cause multiple taproots to grow.

Taproots can make gardening a hard job. They are often difficult to move to new pots. This is because they grow deep very fast. If you damage the root, the plant might die. Dandelions are a common weed with a taproot. They are very hard to pull up. If the root breaks near the top, it may grow back. You must cut the root several centimeters below the ground to stop it.
