Plant morphology is the study of the physical form of plants.

Scientists look at the external structures to understand how they work. This is different from plant anatomy. Anatomy looks at the tiny parts inside a plant. Morphologists use what they see to identify different species. They can use measurements to describe a plant. They might count petals or measure how wide they are. They also look at colors or leaf shapes.

These details help experts name and group plants correctly.

There are four main ways scientists study these forms. First, they use comparative study to look at many species. They look for homologous structures. These are parts that are similar because of shared genetics. For example, cactus spines are homologous to leaves. They look different but share the same basic development. Second, they study vegetative and reproductive parts. Vegetative parts include the roots, stems, and leaves.

Reproductive parts include flowers, seeds, or fern sori. Third, they study different scales. They look at tiny cells or the whole tree. Fourth, they study how plants develop over time.

History shows us many important discoveries in this field. A German botanist named Wilhelm Hofmeister made a huge find. He discovered the alternation of generations. This is a way of life found in all plants. It helps us understand how every plant life cycle works. Scientists also use molecular biology today. They study the tiny processes that decide a plant's shape. This helps them see how plants change over long periods. These studies look at how plants stay the same or change. They look at the patterns in a plant's life cycle.

Plants grow in a very special way.

Most animals grow all their body parts very early. A born animal mostly just grows larger. Plants are different because they make new parts constantly. They have special areas called meristems. These are located at the tips of organs. Meristems allow the plant to make new tissues throughout its life. A living plant always has these embryonic tissues. This means a plant can keep adding roots or leaves. This process is called organogenesis.

Sometimes plants look alike even if they are not related. This is called convergence. It happens when different plants face the same environment. For example, some cacti and Euphorbia look very similar. They both found a way to survive in hot, dry places.

You can also see how light affects plants. They use pigments like chlorophyll to catch light. This helps them make energy through photosynthesis. Other colors like red or yellow help too. These pigments can even attract insects to flowers. This helps the plant make more seeds.
