The name comes from Latin and Greek words meaning "bird science." Many people find birds beautiful or interesting to watch. This makes them very popular to study. Because people love birds, many amateur helpers give their time and money to help. Studying birds helps us understand how life works. It teaches us about how species change and how animals act.

Scientists use many different ways to learn about birds today. They work in laboratories and out in the wild. Some study anatomy, which is the way a bird's body is built. Others study physiology to see how their bodies work. Some look at ecology to see how birds live in nature. Many use birds as models to test their ideas. They want to see if their predictions about nature are correct.

Humans have watched birds since the Stone Age. Some very old drawings show people were interested in them. Birds were often used as food by early people. Excavations have found bones from 80 different species in old settlements.

Ancient cultures also had many names for birds. Some names even sound like the noises the birds make. People in Egypt used birds in their writing too. In China, people used artificial incubation to hatch poultry around 246 BC.

History shows that early ideas about birds were sometimes wrong. Aristotle wrote about birds in 350 BC. He listed 170 species and noted how they migrate.

However, he believed swallows slept through the winter. This mistake stayed popular for a very long time. Another myth said barnacle geese grew from sea creatures. People believed this from the 11th century until much later. Scientists eventually learned the true way these birds live.

Modern science has discovered where birds actually came from. We now know birds are descendants of dinosaurs. They came from small, feathered dinosaurs called theropods. These creatures emerged during the Jurassic period, 160 million years ago.

Learning about birds connects us to the deep history of our planet. It shows how small creatures can change into something amazing. We can see these connections by looking at bird bones and behavior. This helps us protect the living things on Earth today.
