The word comes from Ancient Greek terms meaning "insect" and "study." People who work in this field are called entomologists. They study many different kinds of living things. Scientists have already described over 1.3 million insect species.

This is a huge job because there are so many varieties. Many insects look very similar to each other. Some differences are so small they need a microscope to see.

To study insects, scientists follow many different paths. Some experts focus on how insects affect human health. This is called medical entomology. Others look at how insects help solve crimes. This special branch is known as forensic entomology. It looks at insect life cycles at crime scenes. Some specialists only study one group of insects. For example, a person might study only beetles. This field of study is called Coleopterology. Other experts might focus on flies or ants.

Humans have been interested in insects for a very long time. Ancient Roman philosopher Pliny the Elder wrote about them. In the year 760, Ibn al-A'rābī wrote about flies. Modern scientific study really began in the 16th century. In 1602, Ulisse Aldrovandi published a book on insect animals. Later, Jan Swammerdam described how insects grow and change. In 1705, Maria Sibylla Merian wrote about tropical insects. Many early collectors kept cabinets of curiosity in Europe. This led to the start of natural history societies.

History shows how the field grew into a profession. William Kirby is known as the father of entomology in England. He helped start the Royal Entomological Society in London in 1833. In the late 1800s, the field grew because of farming. This was called the era of economic entomology. Many famous people became entomologists over the years. Charles Darwin and E. O. Wilson were both part of this history. Today, many large collections are kept in museums. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is one such place.

You can see how entomology links to your own world. Many people enjoy identifying butterflies or dragonflies as a hobby. Even though it is hard, it is a fun way to explore. Scientists use new tools like automated identification systems. These systems help name species quickly. Entomology also helps farmers protect their crops. It helps keep people safe from diseases spread by bugs. Learning about insects helps us understand the whole planet.
