Birdwatching, or birding, is the wonderful hobby of observing birds.

People do this for fun or to help with science. You can watch birds with just your eyes. Many people use tools like binoculars or telescopes to see better. Some people listen for bird songs to find them. You can even watch birds through webcams or smart cameras on bird feeders.

There are different ways people enjoy this activity. Some call themselves birders because they study many small details. They learn about bird colors, where they live, and when they move.

Birders often keep a life list. This is a special list of every bird they have ever seen. They might write down the date and the place too. Some people even make lists for just their own yard or their home state.

Some birders love the thrill of the chase. In the United Kingdom, people call this "twitching."

A twitcher is someone who travels a long way to see a rare bird. They want to add that rare bird to their list. This can happen in many places like the Netherlands or Sweden. Sometimes, huge crowds gather to see one special bird. For example, 2,500 people went to Kent to see a golden-winged warbler. This bird is actually from North America!

Birdwatching has a long and interesting history. In the late 1700s, people began to enjoy birds for their beauty. Before that, people mostly thought of birds as food.

In the late 1800s, groups like the Audubon Society started to protect birds. They wanted to stop the trade in feathers. In the US, Florence Bailey wrote a guide called Birds through an Opera Glass in 1889. Later, tools like bicycles and cars helped people reach new places to find birds.

Today, birdwatching is a huge part of the world.

It brings a lot of money to many different countries. In the United States, birders contributed $36 billion to the economy in 2006. In Turkey, birders at Lake Manyas spend over $100 million every year. This money helps local communities and protects nature. Many companies even run birding tours to help people see rare animals. This helps keep the birds' homes safe for a long time.
