A designer starts by making a big plan called a master plan. They study the soil and how water moves through the land. They might design a green roof to catch rain. This helps manage stormwater and keeps the environment healthy. They also make sure spaces are fun for people to use.

This profession has a very long history of shaping the world. Before the year 1800, people mostly designed gardens for kings. André Le Nôtre was a famous designer for King Louis XIV. He worked on the grand Gardens of Versailles in France.

In 1828, a man named Gilbert Laing Meason invented the term "landscape architecture." Later, John Claudius Loudon helped make the name popular. He was a Scottish designer who wrote about different garden styles. He described some gardens as geometric and others as natural.

Many famous people helped build this profession in different countries. In the United States, Frederick Law Olmsted used the title in 1863. He is well known for designing Central Park in New York City.

Beatrix Farrand was another very important American designer. She was the only woman among the first group of professional designers. She worked on many college campuses like Yale and Princeton. In 1948, a large group called IFLA was started in England. Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe served as its very first president.

Today, landscape architecture connects many different parts of our lives. It blends garden design with the way we plan our cities. This helps create better places for people to live and play. Designers work on everything from busy city squares to quiet waterfronts. They also help protect nature in coastal areas or near rivers. By using science and art, they make the world more beautiful. Their work ensures that our outdoor spaces stay healthy for a long time.
