Designers look at the big picture to shape towns and cities. They want to make urban areas beautiful and fair for everyone. They also aim to make them sustainable for the Earth. This work looks at how people use streets, parks, and plazas. These areas are called public spaces because people use them every day.

Urban design connects many different types of experts to get the job done.

This work happens by mixing many different subjects together. Designers use ideas from architecture and landscape design to shape the land. They also use civil engineering to build important structures. It is not just about buildings, though. They must study how people act and how money works in a city. They even look at things like geography and the natural world.

This way, they can organize local environments to work well for the community. They try to make sure everything fits together in a smart way.

People have been planning cities for a very long time. Ancient cultures in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas used careful designs. A famous Greek man named Hippodamus of Miletus was a great planner. He is known for the Hippodamian plan, which is a grid layout. In England, some 9th-century towns like Southampton used grids too.

These towns were built quickly to protect people from invaders. Designing cities has always reflected what people believe or how they live.

In the late 1800s, cities grew very fast because of industry. This caused many problems like crowded and unhealthy living areas. Around 1898, Sir Ebenezer Howard started the garden city movement. He wanted small, planned towns surrounded by green parks.

His idea was for a town to hold 32,000 people. He planned for separate areas for homes, jobs, and farms. This helped make sure cities were organized and healthy for workers.

In the 20th century, the way we design cities changed again. The rise of the automobile meant cities had to focus on roads. In 1956, the specific term "urban design" was used at Harvard University. Writers like Jane Jacobs also changed how we think about streets.

She argued that cities need "eyes on the street" to stay safe. This means having people in public spaces to watch over the area. Today, urban design helps us build better places to live.
